Files, saving and sharing

A design is one DSL document. It can live in your browser, in a file on your computer, or in an S3 bucket, and Save (Ctrl+S) writes it back to wherever it came from. There is no autosave.

Where Save writes

The document came from…Save…
Nothing (a new design)Keeps it in this browser's storage
A file you openedWrites the file in place (Chrome and Edge). Other browsers download a copy with the same name
S3, opened with access keysWrites the object back
S3, opened from a signed URLCan't write; the S3 dialog opens so you can enter access keys
A view-only share linkIs disabled

The top-bar badge shows the current source, and an amber dot on Save means there are unsaved changes. Saving also clears the undo history.

Opening a file

  • Open file (Ctrl+O) opens a .dsl (or .txt) file. Save then writes back to it.
  • Or drop a file anywhere on the page. If you have unsaved changes, you are asked whether to save, discard or cancel first.
  • A file with errors opens in the DSL editor, with the errors marked, so you can fix it and import it.

WARNING

Opening a file with Open file replaces the current document without asking. Save first.

When you reload the page, the app picks up where you were: it reopens the S3 object, or asks Reopen <file>? (with Use browser copy or Reopen file), or loads the copy saved in the browser.

When the file changes elsewhere

The app checks the source for changes — a local file every 2 seconds, an S3 object every 10, and whenever the window regains focus. If someone else changed it, a dialog offers Keep my version or Reload from file / S3. If the source is gone, Keep working keeps your copy.

Exporting

  • Export DSL (Ctrl+E) downloads the design as topology.dsl.
  • Export PNG (Ctrl+Shift+E) saves the whole diagram of the current view (Rack Elevation, Port Mapping, Power Budget or Fabric Topology) as networker-<view>-<date>.png, at twice screen resolution on a white background.
  • BOM → Export CSV downloads the bill of materials.

S3

The S3 button in the top bar opens a dialog with two tabs.

Signed URL · read-only — paste a presigned S3 URL and click Open. Nothing can be saved back.

Access keys · read & write — enter the Object URL, Access key, Secret key and optionally the Region, then:

  • Open loads the object; Save then writes back to it.
  • Save current here writes the current design to that URL. If an object is already there the button reads Replace object, with a warning.

The secret key is kept only for the current tab unless you tick Remember secret key in this browser.

While a document from S3 is open, the dialog's Share section makes a link to it:

  1. Tick Read-only views to make a link that can look but not edit or save.
  2. With access keys, choose how long the link lasts: 1 hour, 1 day or 7 days.
  3. Click Copy link and send it.

Whoever opens the link sees the design directly. A view-only link disables every editing control; Export DSL still downloads a copy.

Leaving with unsaved changes

Closing the tab asks first. Reloading (Ctrl+R or F5) shows Unsaved changes with Save, Discard and Cancel.
